These are really funny and cute, and he couldn't wait to wear them. So I checked to see if they were color-fast (ran them under water for a few seconds) and they seemed fine. But he had a light-colored shirt in the laundry with them, which is now pinkish. That didn't deter him, and he threw the shorts on as soon as they were dry. They're not super soft, but I figure they'll soften more over time. He can't wait to wear them to camp, though. If they were a bit less expensive, we'd buy more of these funny drawers for sure!
